Wir machen mehrere kleine Pausen. Bring dir daher gern etwas zu Essen und zu Trinken mit.

RASA
Exploring deeper connections in storytelling

RASA is a sanskrit word meaning ‚juice‘, ‚flavour‘ or ‚essence‘. It is a concept in the Indian arts, fundamental to music, dance, literature, visual arts, theatre and oral storytelling, and focusses on creating a meaningful emotional connection between the art and the audience. Bhava

I first came across Rasa on a storytelling apprenticeship with Indian storyteller, Dr Vayu Naidu. Having been working and travelling in Nepal before starting a Drama degree at the University of Kent, I was thrilled to meet Vayu and begin her storytelling journey. I have since had the privilege of training with Indian Pandvani performer, Ritu Verma, and journeyed over 10,000 miles across India by train, bus, rattling rickshaw and rickety bicycle. I’ve lived with a yak-herding family on the Tibetan plateau, studied a little Kathakali dance-drama in Kerala and worked at the Kattaikkuttu School in Tamil Nadu, learning from the children who perform stories from the Mahabharata through music, dance and song.

More recently I’ve toured several times with British Council India and performed at the Kathakar Storyteller’s Festival in Delhi. Work and travel in India have kindled in me a great passion for Hindu mythology and epic.

Rasa plays an integral role in my process in preparing stories for performance, and in performance itself, whether solo or together with the sitar player I collaborate with. I would be very excited to share some of this process with storytellers in Germany. During the time we have together, I propose that we:

Explore the 8 different Rasas through games and exercises in imagery, language and mapping
All work up our own story – perhaps a short myth or a section of epic – using Rasa techniques in the process
Explore use of performance space in relation to Rasa, including physical movement, epic and intimate movement and physical relationship to audience

The aim for workshop would be that participants come away feeling both challenged and inspired, with a new set of tools and techniques for their own performances.
